Artwork Details
Night Fishermen is a documentary image that behaves like theatre. Two men stand near the river, each carrying a glowing lamp, while the mountains behind them disappear into blue-black darkness. The light is practical, but in the photograph it becomes symbolic: a small circle of warmth inside a vast landscape. Kwok’s Ritual series often begins in this kind of transformation, where real work and ceremonial atmosphere meet without needing to be staged. The men are not posing as actors; the camera simply recognizes the drama already present in the scene. The fish, baskets, raft, lamps, and silhouettes all hold the picture between labour and myth. As a print, the image rewards slow looking because the deep shadows keep releasing small details around the figures.
